Synergistic effect of Achillea millefolium L. combined with bleomycin on prostate cancer cell
Authors
Abstract:
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of methanolic extract of Achillea millefolium L. (MEA) on the antiproliferative activity of bleomycin on human prostate cancer and normal skin cells. Materials and Methods: Human prostate cancer cell (DU-145) and human non-malignant fibroblast cell (HFFF2) were treated with MEA at various concentrations ( 20, 100, 500, 1000 and 2000 µg/ml), bleomycin alone and with their combinations. Further their MEA and bleomycin effects on cell viability were evaluated. Free radical scavenging property was determined for this herbal extract. Results: The combination of Achillea millefolium with bleomycin increased significantly inhibition of cell growth in cancer cell. MEA enhanced significantly cytotoxicity induced by bleomycin with 60% and 49% in survival rate at doses 1000 and 2000 µg/ml, respectively, while it was 85% in bleomycin-treated cells. MEA did not exhibit any cytotoxicity on HFFF2 cells. Conclusion: Study suggests that Achillea millefolium enhanced the cell toxicity induced by bleomycin in the prostate cancer cell without any significant toxicity on normal cell.

full textOccurence of Phomopsis Sp. on Achillea Millefolium
Throughout many years of studying mycopopulation of weeds, we have found fungi of the Diaporthe/ Phomopsis complex interesting to research. After years of examining plants of Achillea millefolium L., some of them exhibited symptoms of infection typical for Diaporthe/Phomopsis species. A. millefolium was usually found in uncultivated, pasture and forest flora, but also in or nearby sunflower fie...
full textAchillea millefolium L. – phytochemical profile and in vitro antioxidant activity
Nowadays, medicinal plants used in folk medicine are being increasingly studied and used on pharmaceutical, food and nutraceutical fields. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium L.) is widely used in both folk and official medicine. Therefore, in the present paper different extracts of yarrow inflorescences and upper leaves were investigated for their total polyphenolic content and antioxidant activity u...
full textPhenolic compounds from Achillea millefolium L. and their bioactivity.
Since antiquity, Achillea millefolium L. (Asteraceae) has been used in traditional medicine of several cultures, from Europe to Asia. Its richness in bioactive compounds contributes to a wide range of medicinal properties. In this study, we assessed A. millefolium methanolic extract and its isolated components for free radical scavenging activity against 2,2-diphenyl-pycrilhydrazyl, total antio...
